The Sir Keith Murdoch Award for Journalism

This is the major News Award. It recognises an outstanding body of news-breaking or campaigning journalism that demonstrates the leadership, initiative and courage of the reporter(s) and the impact of the story.

Newspaper of the Year

This is the paper that demonstrates the most substantial improvement in quality, engagement and relevance to its readers across all media platforms available.

Regional Newspaper of the Year

This category is for the regional daily newspaper that demonstrates the most substantial improvements in quality and relevance to its readers across all media platforms available.

Community Newspaper of the Year

This category is for the community or rural newspaper that demonstrates the most substantial improvement in quality and relevance to its readers across all media platforms available to it.

Magazine of the Year

This is the magazine that demonstrates the most substantial improvement in quality, engagement and relevance to its readers across all platforms.

Innovation of the Year

This award recognises new and creative means of story telling through the innovative development of tools, products and technology. It can apply to any platform but must show originality, made-for-medium execution and create a richer audience experience.

Chairman’s Award

This award aims to capture the spirit of newspapers and News Limited and will honour extraordinary ideas, words, actions, or courage.

Scoop of the Year

This award is for the individual or team that broke the single best exclusive story. This award is for a single piece of work, not a portfolio.

Young Journalist of the Year

This award recognises mature judgment and moral resolve in new journalists and photographers. Entrants must have fewer than three years' experience in full-time journalism.

Campaign of the Year

Campaigns nominated can be on any issue, but they must have demonstrably brought about change and public benefit.

Features Journalist of the Year

Journalists entering this category may be regular or occasional columnists as well as opinion writers and feature writers.

Sports Journalist of the Year

This award is for excellence in reporting on sport.

Business Journalist of the Year

This award is for excellence in reporting on business, finance and economics.

Specialist Writer of the Year

Journalists entering this category will work in specific rounds such as information technology, property, travel, arts and entertainment, media, transport, communications, aviation, health, local government or other areas. It can include correspondents.

Production Journalist of the Year

This award recognises excellence in headline writing, page layout and delivery of editorial content packages.

Visual Journalist of the Year

This award is for a body of work - up to five examples - which best demonstrate the photographer or video journalist's ability to consistently deliver attention-grabbing and powerful images that led their publication's coverage of any story or issue.

Visual Journalism of the Year

This award recognises the enduring power of great photography and the emerging importance of video. This category is for the single best news photograph or piece of video of the year.

Artist of the Year

This award is open to both illustrators and cartoonists. It covers graphics and illustrations in either digital or hand-drawn formats; and editorial cartoons.

Designer of the Year

This award is for the design of pages, covers, sections or whole publications. Entries may have been published in our newspapers, iPad apps, magazines, inserted magazines, supplements or websites.
