Visual Journalist of the Year

This award is for a body of work – up to five examples – which best demonstrate the photographer or video journalist’s ability to consistently deliver attention-grabbing and powerful images that led their publication’s coverage of any story or issue.
Submitted photographs or video can be of any subject and may have appeared in any section of a News Limited newspaper, magazine or digital platform.
The five examples can be either from a series or of separate subjects and different genres.
It may include a mix of stills photography and video.
Criteria
- Newsworthiness
- Technical skills and excellence
- Connection and engagement with audience
- Originality, creativity and imagination
- Consistency across 12 months
- Beauty and drama of imagery
What to submit
- Up to five examples of published work to illustrate your best work and range. This can be five photographs, five videos or a mix of stills and video.
- A supporting statement of up to 500 words describing the entry.
Any individual video submitted should ideally not exceed 10MB. It is the content, not necessarily the quality that the video will be judged on.
Supporting statement
The supporting statement for this award does not need to be as comprehensive as it does for other categories. However, please describe as fully as possible:
- The assignment you were on and its background
- How the photograph or video came about
- What you were trying to achieve with it
- The conditions at the time
- Any technical or practical difficulties you encountered
- Anything else that may be relevant to the judges
It is preferable that you submit not only your photographs, but also the pages on which they were published so judges can view them in context.
How many times can you enter?
Individuals may enter the same category only once a year. If there is a strong news photo or video in your portfolio, it can also be entered in the Visual Journalism of the Year category.
