2011 NewsAwards entries open

Visual Journalism of the Year

This award recognises the enduring power of great photography and the emerging importance of video.
This category is for the single best news photograph or piece of video of the year. It is for ONE example only, not a body of work. The photo or video piece can still be included, if desired, in a portfolio for Visual Journalist of the Year.

Criteria:

  • Newsworthiness and audience relevance
  • Technical excellence
  • Originality
  • Degree of difficulty
  • Impact
  • Uniqueness of image or specific video piece

What to submit:

  1. One example of published work (stills or video) to support the entry.
  2. A supporting statement of up to 500 words describing the entry.
Any digital alteration must be declared.
Any individual video submitted should ideally not exceed 10MB. It is the content, not necessarily the quality that the video will be judged on. The supporting statement for this award does not need to be as comprehensive as it does for other categories. However, please describe as fully as possible:
  • The assignment you were on and its background
  • How the photograph or video came about
  • What you were trying to achieve with it
  • The conditions at the time
  • Any technical or practical difficulties you encountered
  • Anything else that may be relevant to the judges.

It is preferable that you submit not only the photograph itself, but also the page on which it was published so judges can view it in context of the story.

How many times can you enter?

Individuals may enter the same category only once a year.
The material submitted for Visual Journalism of the Year can also be included in your portfolio for Visual Journalist of the Year.
