Preliminary instructions

Entries for News Awards 2010 are totally digital, either online through this website or, if preferred, via CD-ROM. Hard copy entries are not accepted.
The entry coupon has been improved, making it easier to complete, but remember, entries can be made only on a computer connected to a News network. Even though the website is in the public domain, the server with the entry coupon is hosted internally for security reasons.
Instructions are on the form – but READ THIS FIRST.
1. Read the criteria of the category you are wishing to enter. You may enter up to FIVE pieces of work to support your entry. This means five stories, or five photos, pieces of art or design only – not a portfolio. If you enter more than five, the judges will consider only the first five.
A story, in terms of judging, is one piece of work – and does not include subsequent follow-ups. The impact or follow-ups it generated can be explained in your statement to support each piece of work. The purpose of this is to provide judges with context and perspective for the work, the background, and what went into it.
In two categories – Scoop and Photograph of the Year – you may submit only ONE example of work to support your entry.
2. Before going to the website to enter, first gather all the elements necessary. These are:
• Your attachments of the work you plan to submit, whether page PDFs from archives, Jpeg images, or copy from Newstext [If you are entering a text or design category, click here for the guidelines for library PDF or page archive retrieval. If you are a photographer or artist, click here for the guidelines for saving and sizing images in Photoshop to the required size for entry. These can be printed out.
• Your resume or CV.
• Your supporting statements covering each piece of work. Sometimes one statement will cover all examples. If so, use the full attachment allocation for example one. It will take up to 12 examples.
• Put all these elements in a folder and store in a file on your computer.
3. All criteria and conditions of entry are listed under the individual categories on the website. Read them to ensure your entry is eligible.
4. Follow the links on the site to get to the entry coupon, then follow the instructions. The coupon is compatible with either Internet Explorer 5.0 or later versions and Firefox browsers. Entry is straightforward, if you have everything ready first.
5. Once you have reviewed the attachments on the coupon – and made any changes you deem necessary – submit your entry.
6. If you experience problems contact the awards administrator Les Hoffman 02 6680 2080 or email hoffmanl@newsltd.com.au
